Chapter 8

Lloyd was getting frustrated. The man was simply too dense to see he was messing with the order of things. There were rules among their kind, and this young man was ignoring them all. For a piece of ass, he would imagine.

“Look. I’ll explain it to you in simple terms. When you marry beneath you, such as you’re doing now, you start to weaken the bloodline that makes our kind, the rich, such superior stock.” He asked him if that was what his daughter had done. “Yes, that’s it exactly. When she decided to lower herself to that man’s level, I did everything I could to make her see reason. But nothing, not even taking the one thing away that I knew she valued as much as I do, money, did any good. Then she got pregnant. That should never have happened.”

“Perhaps they loved each other. Just as I do your granddaughter.” He told him for the fifth time to stop calling her that. “But she was a child of your daughter. That, by law, makes her your granddaughter. Why are you so set against that? Or is it that people will find out? Is that what this is about, you’re afraid that people will find out that you have a granddaughter that you never acknowledged or even bothered to see?”

“She’s a bastard of that man and my lovely daughter. She can’t be anything to me. Don’t you see?” Jason told him that he did not. “Like you’ve said, what will people think when they figure out that I have a long-lost grandchild? And that my daughter soiled herself with that man? They’ll feel sorry for me, of course, but some of them will wonder at my feelings. Not that I have any for this child, but to think that I’d have to associate with her.... Well, that makes my skin crawl. She’s lower than either of us.”

“You keep saying that. That man, his name was Chad Graham. As I said before, perhaps your daughter loved him. And that alone should be enough for you. But you’ve never answered my question…why do you care who I marry? Other than you think that my stock, whatever that is, would be corrupted. And when we have children of our own, we’ll make you a great grandfather, and your wife a great grandmother.”

“Heaven forbid.” Evelyn shivered. “I do not want a thing to do with the child either. Nothing, I tell you. And you might not want to count on children, Mr. Crosby. She might have the same thing her mother did.”

Lloyd was going to bring that up next, scare the young man into leaving the brat. No children meant that there was no one to carry on the line of his people. And he knew that someone like Crosby would want to have children of his blood to continue the family fortune. Just as he had wanted.

“I’m sorry, what do you mean, the same thing her mother did?” Lloyd looked at his wife, then back at Jason when he continued.
